What can AI actually automate in a small business?
AI gets talked about as if it can do everything. In practice, for a small business, it's genuinely useful for a fairly specific set of repetitive, time-consuming tasks — and not a replacement for judgement, relationships or the things that actually need a person.
Where AI tends to help most
Drafting and tidying up written communication — emails, quotes, job descriptions, social posts — so you're editing rather than starting from a blank page.
Summarising and organising information: meeting notes, long email threads, customer feedback, documents.
Answering routine customer questions automatically, so simple queries don't sit in an inbox waiting for you.
Spotting patterns in data you already have — bookings, sales, enquiries — that would take hours to work out by hand.
Where it's weaker, or needs a human anyway
Anything that depends on judgement about a specific customer, a difficult situation, or a decision with real consequences.
Tasks where the 'personal touch' is the actual value you're selling — AI can draft the first pass, but it shouldn't be the final word.
Anything involving sensitive customer data without proper thought about privacy and where that data goes.
How to actually get started
Start with one repetitive task that currently eats real time each week, and automate just that — not everything at once. Most of the value comes from getting one or two things properly right, not from a wholesale overhaul.
